Webpage design and bad mistakes

Well, we know we all have to pay the bills. I know many of us want to get traffic to our websites. And some of us just want to earn enough money to pay our costs so that this thing we like to do is free. But, hey, that does not mean you should plaster a hundred ads or a dozen banners on every page of your website.

A banner here and there, a small button or text links some is good, but I’ve seen some webpage design that have tens and a few that have hundreds of ads on every page! Now this is tasteless and is virtually guaranteed to get your visitors to hit the button as fast to return to the hand.

One of the worst types of webpage design, in my opinion, is the ads that are just huge. People do not surf the web looking for banners, text links and other ads to click. In fact, statistically, most people browsing, and you are looking for (a) information, (b) entertainment, or someone (c) to talk. Most Internet users are not looking for something to buy.

A good webpage design offers excellent content (which can be graphical, text or interactive features). Even sites that sell something that also offer content that is of interest to visitors. A glance at any good shopping site and see what I mean. Search Amazon or Barnes and Noble and you’ll understand – these sites offer lots of content.  Reviews  products, consumer reviews, and large amounts of data about the items being sold. This is what people want – information.

Some things on the website that you should never do

Notices saying “please, please, pretty, keep my site free and click on something.” This only makes your webpage design look like an amateur. In my humble opinion, is very tacky to expect people to click on the links just so you can “keep the site free.” Come with or find a good product or service and sell it if necessary. Advertising is not in itself of value – only the products or services have value. Websites that are just ads – I guess it’s a place for brochures or ads the entire site, but I personally press as soon as I find one. I want content. If you require this many advertisements I’d buy a magazine or search the newspaper classified section.

The large ads. I remember one of the important things in web design is the load time. Your site should load quickly. If you include large ads that increase load times.

Pop-ups – If you do a survey of Internet users, you will find that these are among the most hated “features” that exist. No one likes this type of windows, and if the site has many of them will lose visitors quickly. Oh, you can get a couple more clicks to your newsletter subscription, but the amount of time visitors spend on your site will be limited and of poorer quality.
